Engineered Stone Ban
For the purposes of the WHS Regulations, engineered stone is defined as an artificial product that contains 1% or more crystalline silica (as a weight/weigh concentration) that is created by combining materials such as natural stone, water, resins ,or pigments and becomes hardened.
‘Processing’ in relation to engineered stone, porcelain products and sintered stone means using power tools or other mechanical plant to crush, cut, grind, trim, sand, abrasive polish or drill the stone or product.
Processing can generate dust that contains respirable crystalline silica, which is a hazardous substance that can cause serious health problems if inhaled. Therefore, any processing of these products must be controlled by using appropriate control measures and respiratory protective equipment. The processing of engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs is also prohibited, except for some limited exceptions for legacy engineered stone.
The prohibition applies to engineered stone (as described above):
- Benchtops
- panels, and
- slabs.
